EXCAVATION GUIDE

TYPES OF GRAVEL USED IN EXCAVATION

Understanding the various types of gravel is essential for selecting the most suitable material for construction, landscaping, or drainage projects. Gravel comes in different sizes, shapes, and compositions, each offering unique properties and applications.

  1. Crushed Stone: Crushed stone is a popular type of gravel made by mechanically crushing larger rocks into smaller pieces. It’s commonly used as a base material for driveways, roads, and walkways due to its excellent compaction properties and durability.
  1. Pea Gravel: Pea gravel consists of small, rounded stones typically ranging from 1/8 to 3/8 inches in diameter. Its smooth texture and attractive appearance make it ideal for decorative landscaping, pathways, and drainage applications.
  1. River Rock: River rock is naturally rounded stones harvested from riverbeds or streams. They come in various sizes and colors, offering a decorative touch to landscaping features such as garden borders, water features, and dry river beds.
  1. Crushed Granite: Crushed granite is a durable and permeable gravel option made from crushed granite rock. It’s commonly used for driveways, pathways, and as a base material for pavers due to its stability and ability to withstand heavy loads.
  1. Pea Pebbles: Pea pebbles are small, smooth stones similar in size to pea gravel but with a smoother texture. They’re often used for decorative purposes in landscaping, such as in Japanese gardens or around ornamental plants.
  1. Limestone Gravel: Limestone gravel consists of crushed limestone rocks, offering excellent drainage properties and a lighter color palette. It’s commonly used for drainage projects, as a base material for patios, or as a decorative element in landscaping.
  1. Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA): RCA is made from crushed concrete from demolition sites. It’s an eco-friendly option that offers similar properties to traditional gravel and is commonly used as a base material for roads, driveways, and parking lots.

Understanding the characteristics and uses of different gravel types allows contractors, landscapers, and homeowners to make informed decisions when selecting materials for their projects, ensuring optimal performance and aesthetics.
